Abstract

1365254 Electrolytic molten bath production of metals ALUMINIUM CO of AMERICA 22 Nov 1972 [24 March 1972], 53940/72 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for production of metal, e.g. aluminium, from a molten bath includes a magnetic conducting shell having an elongated flux impeding means, e.g. a slot cut from the shell material and, for instance filled with non-magnetic material, positioned at right-angles to a componant of magnetic flux, thus altering the magnetic field within the cell to lessen movement of the molten metal within the cell. Selective use may also be made of the magnetic field of a bus-bar positioned outside the cell by locating a magnetic conducting structure adjacent the bus-bar so that the structure and shell together surround the busbar, thus preventing the shell from shielding the bath from the magnetic field produced by the conductor.
