Abstract

1365151 Pipe coupling HEPWORTH IRON CO Ltd 31 Aug 1972 [5 June 1971] 19136/71 Heading F2G A pipe coupling 1 comprises a sleeve 2 of carbon spring steel coated with a resilient plastics material 4, the sleeve having integral lips 3 which contact and seal against pipe ends inserted into the sleeve. As shown, a number of projections 5 are formed integrally with the internal coating 4 to correctly locate a first pipe received in the sleeve. The sleeve is sufficiently flexible to accommodate some ovality or irregularity in the pipe diameter or cross-section or misalignment between the pipe axes. In other embodiments the projections 5 are replaced by an annular member (7, 7A) (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), which may be of plastics or plastics coated metal, received in a depression (6) in the sleeve. In further embodiments the projections 5 or annular member (7, 7A) are replaced by a flange either bent from the wall of the sleeve (11) (Fig. 5, not shown) or formed from two welded end portions of separate parts of the sleeve (12) (Fig. 6, not shown). In the latter two embodiments the inwardly directed lips 3 are bent or curved back towards the bore of the sleeve.
