Abstract

1365133 Matrix displays SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 12 Nov 1971 [17 Nov 1970] 52680/71 Heading G5C [Also in Division G3] In an electric timepiece having a solid state digital time displaying arrangement, the latter comprises an active or light-emitting display for low ambient lighting conditions, a passive or reflective display for high ambient lighting conditions, and means for selecting one or the other of the displays. Fig. 3 shows a self-luminous gallium arsenide diode display arrangement 21 mounted on a sapphire or spinel semi-conductor base-plate 11 together with a divider, oscillator and driving circuit 3 using an MOS transistor. The passive display is formed by a liquid crystal 10 which is retained by a transparent cover 13 and spacer 12, and by an electrode 2. Radiation from the arrangement 21 passes through the crystal 10 to produce a visible display in dark conditions. The selection of the appropriate display is performed by a photo-sensitive resistor 4 and means are provided for manually adjusting the amount of light reaching this transistor. To further minimize power consumption, the active display is only energized if a manual switch 15 is operated. The use of a solid state day/date display is envisaged.
