Abstract
1364669 Loud-speakers; microphones STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 14 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 59930/71 Heading H4J A transducer for use with a microphone, loud-speaker, or telephone earpiece comprises a pivoted elongate armature of magnetically soft material, e.g. ferro-magnetic material, having a permanent magnet attached at one end and situated between the poles of further permanent magnets. The permanent magnets are made of rare-earth cobalt alloys of coercivity of the order of 10,000 oersted, e.g. the magnets may each be a 1 mm. cube of a samarium-cobalt alloy. A first embodiment (Fig. 2) includes a pivoted armature 10 having permanent magnets 11, 12 attached thereto and a coil wound around its magnetically soft portion for supplying a drive current for a diaphragm 13 or for receiving a current caused by the diaphragm being driven. Four further permanent magnets 14-17 are used as the stationary polepieces without the need for the usual soft magnetic circuit. The arrangement of Fig. 3 includes a soft magnetic circuit 20 coupling two permanent magnets. The armature is pivoted at one end and is laminated, the laminations being formed as horns 22-23 directed at the air gaps in the magnetic circuit. In this arrangement the central magnet provides positive stiffness to the armature vibrations, whilst the outer laminµ act like a conventional balanced armature giving negative stiffness. A pick up coil (or drive coil) may be mounted on the armature as shown or on the soft magnetic U-shaped yoke 20. The manner in which the armature is driven by (drives) the diaphragm is not disclosed.
