Abstract
1364538 Lining metallurgical vessels AIR REPAIR Inc 16 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 43303/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C1 and F4] A metallurgical vessel, e.g. a ladle, soaking bits, furnaces and cupolas is provided with a renewal lining by applying on the inner surface at a temperature of 400-3,000F. a refractory composition comprising by weight 40-70% clay, 28-58% quartzite and 1/4-4% of an organic binder having a melting point of 250-400F, selected from pitch, tar, rosin, polyvinyl chloride and polytetrachloroethylene. The heat causes the binders to carbonise and leaves a mosaic structure of crystalline carbon intermixed with the other constituents of the lining. Preferred clay materials are alumina and silica. The refractory composition may be applied by centrifugal means moved coaxially of the containment. As shown in Fig. 1, a ladle 10 to be re-lined has a remaining refractory lining 16. Centrifugal impeller 20 is lowered into the ladle and the impeller rotated to apply a mixture of refractory composition on the inner surface of the ladle to produce a new lining 32. The lining 32 may be applied by moving the impeller vertically in either direction. The thickness of the lining 32 may vary from 1/4 inches up to 10 inches.
