Abstract
1364438 Lead-acid batteries with gelled electrolyte ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 16 Aug 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 39747/70 Heading H1B A dry-charged lead-acid battery having conventional positive and negative plates 10, 11 spaced by ribbed separators 12 is supplied by the manufacturer with the electrolyte in gel form distributed in a discontinuous manner as droplets or patches throughout the electrolyte space. (In the Figures these patches are denoted by speckled areas.) To use the battery water is added, the dispersed gel patches ensuring that the liquid electrolyte forms quickly and the battery may start a car after only one hour. The electrolyte gel patches are formed in the battery by supplying concentrated H 2 SO 4 of molar concentration of at least 8 and sodium silicate of a molarity of at least 1 to the normal battery filling apertures at controlled flow rates, the two liquids blending before they enter the battery. The liquid concentrations are such that the gel is formed within 5-25 sees. Filling apparatus is described with reference to Figs. 4-6 (not shown).
