Abstract

A secondary electrical energy accumulator system, comprising at least one cell consisting of a normally positive electrode to reduce a halogen placed in electrical contact with it and a normally negative electrode to oxidize an oxidizable metal arranged in electrical contact therewith, during the electric discharge of said cells; a storage tank adapted to hold a quantity of halogen hydrate; an aqueous electrolyte containing ions of said metal and of said halogen; communication means for connecting said cell to said tank; circulation means for circulating said electrolyte through said communication means between the aforementioned cell and reservoir to progressively oxidize said oxidizable metal and decompose said halogen hydrate during the discharge of said cell; charging means comprising a source of electrical energy adapted to be connected to said accumulator system in such a way that the normal polarity of the electrodes in the said cell is reversed to effect the reduction of the oxidizable metal ions in the normally negative electrode and the oxidation of halogen ions to the elemental state at the normally positive electrode; means for recovering the mentioned oxidized halogen; hydrate-forming means for transforming a mixture of the recovered halogen and water, in a suitable proportion, into the corresponding halogen hydrate; heat transfer means connectable to said system during its recharging to maintain said mixture within a prescribed temperature range to facilitate the formation and regeneration of said halogen hydrate and disconnectable thereof after recharging and return means to return the hydrate of regenerated halogen named to said tank.
