Abstract

1364120 Compressor rotors ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 21 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54935/71 Heading FIT An axial flow compressor rotor comprises blade supporting discs 16 axially spaced apart by rings 18, the peripheral flanks of discs 16 defining the walls of circumferential blade root retaining grooves 24 each having at least one loading slot 28 in its base through which the blades 10 can be inserted from the rotor interior. Insertion may be effected via the chute (47) Fig. 3 (not shown) of an assembly jig, each blade 10 then being moved circumferentially in groove 24 to its desired position. Each loading slot 28 is finally closed by a resilient plate (52) Fig.4 (not shown) having lugs (60) which engage between the roots of adjacent blades 10 to prevent circumferential movement of the latter and of the plate. A jig is used to insert the plate. Spacer rings 18 are welded, brazed or diffusion bonded in position. In a modification Fig.3 (not shown) the spacer rings are formed by flanges (44) on the peripheral flanks of the rotor discs. In a further arrangement the spacer rings are disposed radially inwardly of the flanges. The stator casing 30 may be forged and machined as a single unit or built up by welding together stator blade platforms and spacer rings. The rotor construction enables the rotor blades to be fitted after the rotor has been fitted into the fully bladed casing.
