Abstract
1364052 Spray carburetters ZENITH CARBURETTER CO Ltd 10 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9459/71 Heading F1B An automatic cold starting device for an internal-combustion engine having an induction passage 12 through which fuel/air mixture is normally supplied to the engine and a main throttle valve 16 in the said induction passage to control the mixture flow, the device comprising an auxiliary passage 18 having an air inlet 19 and an outlet 21 downstream of the main throttle valve 16, a second throttle valve 24 arranged so that engine suction in the auxiliary passage tends to close the second throttle, a fuel supply source 23, 36 arranged to supply a metered quantity of fuel to the auxiliary passage and a thermostatically controlled mechanism operative to limit the closing of the second throttle valve so that, once the engine is running, both the airflow in the auxiliary passage and the fuel supply thereto are progressively decreased with increase in engine temperature. The fuel supply to the nozzle 23 is controlled by a valve 36 which consists of a plunger 38 carrying a profiled needle 39 movable axially in an orifice 41. A sealing ring 42 closes the orifice in the lowermost position of the plunger. The second throttle valve is fixed on a shaft 25 in an offset position so that the air-flow tends to close it. Freely mounted on the same shaft are two levers 32 and 33 and fixed on the shaft is a lever 26 having laterally projecting posts 27 and 28, which enter notches 29 and 31 respectively in the levers 32 and 33. The lever 33 carries a follower 48 which engages a cam 49 and is also connected to the lever 26 by a spring which tends to turn the shaft 25 in the opposite direction to the arrow "A", i.e. towards the open position. The position of the cam is deter- mined by a bi-metallic spring 51, responsive to engine temperature. The lever 32 is connected to the lever 26 by a spring 34 which tends to rotate the lever 32 in the same direction as the arrow "A". A peg 43 on the lever engages a notch 44 in the plunger and moves the valve to the closed position as the second throttle valve closes. The device may also be used with a constant depression carburetter.
