1363871 Phenolic-resin compositions DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 2 Aug 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 36136/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division E1] A composition suitable for use as a drilling fluid additive comprises the reaction product or a physical mixture of (1) at least one salt of sulphonated lignite, sulphonated humic acid and/ or derivatives thereof, and (2) at least one water-soluble phenol-aldehyde condensate and/ or modified phenol-aldehyde condensate. In an embodiment the composition may comprise a physical mixture of the above reaction product and at least one sulphonated lignite or humic acid phenolic condensate, modified phenolic condensate and/or derivatives thereof. The preferred phenolic condensate is obtained from the reaction of a phenol, an aldehyde and a metal salt of sulphurous acid, which may be modified with an aromatic carboxylic acid, such as salicylic acid, urea or melamine, an organic acid anhydride or a dibasic acid. The reaction mixture of (1) and (2) preferably contains one or more aldehydes and/or hydroxides. The cation for the salt (1) is preferably an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and/or an ammonium cation. The lignite derivatives may be further complexed with a transition metal salt, many examples of which are listed. The examples describe the preparation of water-soluble phenolic condensates prepared from (i) phenol, paraformaldehyde, sodium sulphite, sodium bisulphite alone and also modified with salicylic acid, urea, melamine, phthalic anhydride; (ii) phenolsulphonic acid sodium salt, HCHO with toluenesulphonic acid and/or methanesulphonic acid as catalyst alone and also modified with salicylic acid and urea; (iii) phenol, HCHO with H 2 SO 4 as catalyst, (iv) phenol, paraformaldehyde with NaOH as catalyst alone and also modified with salicyclic acid. Many examples of the above are given with variations in reaction procedures. Numerous examples are given of the reaction of the above phenolic condensates with sulphonated lignite to form drilling fluid additives, some of which are further modified by complexing with chromium sulphate. Uses.-Additives for drilling fluids comprising an aqueous and/or organic base, clay or asbestos and conventional additives; tanning industry; controlling fluid loss in cement slurries.
