Abstract

The additives are reaction products of (A) a sulphonated lignite, sulphonated humic acid or deriv., with (B) a (modified) phenolic condensate. (B) is pref. a sulphomethylated water-sol. condensate made by reaction of a phenol, aldehyde and metal salt of sulphurous acid, which may be further modified with an aromatic acid (pref. salicyclic, an amino monomer (pref. urea or melamine), an acid anhydride or dibasic acid. Ratio of (A) to (B) is from 1:10 to 10:1. The cation in (A) is pref. an alkali(ne earth) metal or ammonium, and the reaction product may be converted to a metal complex, by reaction with a transition metal cpd. The additives are suitable for controlling the viscosity and fluid loss of water-based drilling slurries and for improving resistance to flocculation caused by impurities and high temps.
