Abstract

1363804 Zone melting PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 22956/72 Heading B1S In the formation of a single crystal by zonemelting, a solvent for the polycrystalline material is present in the molten zone between the material and a seed crystal. As shown, a polycrystalline rod 10 is secured in support 3 and maintained in contact via the molten zone with seed 8 secured in support 2. The support 2 rotates about the axis A A' whilst the support 3 may be displaced in the longitudinal direction of the axis. The assembly including the bracket 1 is mounted on a threaded rod 4 and moves vertically parallel to axis AA'. The heater, which is fixed comprises a strip-shaped flat heating element 5, powered through 7, contains apertures 6, preferably in the form of a circle therein. The solvent is a thin pellet 9 of solid or sintered solvent material which is positioned on the element 5. Alternatively two smaller pellets 9a and 9b may be provided on either side of the element 5. The example describes the preparation of yttrium iron garnet. The seed crystal was cut in the crystallographic direction [110]. The solvent pellet was made from a non-volatile molten mixture of barium oxide, boron oxide, ferric oxide and yttrium oxide.
