1363723 Headsets AMPLIVOX COMMUNICATIONS Ltd 28 April 1972 [17 May 1971] 15355/71 Heading H4J A mounting member 5, 5<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 1) with means 6 for attachment to a device 1 to be worn on the head has an earphone mounted on a support 10 which is pivotable in each of two mutually perpendicular planes passing through the longitudinal axis of the support 10. Movement of the support in one of the planes is resisted to a greater extent than movement in the other plane. A headset comprises an acetal resin headband 1 provided with two slidable metallic adjustment members 2. Two side arms 4 each support a mounting member 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The side arms 4 can be rotated to be parallel with the headband 1 for transport purposes. The mounting members 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are retained on the side arms 4 by spring clips 6. Pips on the side arms 4 and a series of holes in the clips 6 permit adjustment of the side arms 4. Alternatively the mounting members 5, 5<SP>1</SP> may be fitted to spectacle side frames. A cable 7 for earphone and microphone transducers emerges from the lower face of mounting member 5 and carries a clothing clip 26. A microphone boom tube 8 is of fireproof material such as P.T.F.E. and carries a metallic member 9 for dissipating heat, e.g. from a cigarette lighter. The member 9 also retains an acoustic filter to reduce the effect of implosive sounds produced by the user. The tube 8 is rotatable about its mounting axis and can be slid vertically within a snout 25. The tube 8 may be removed from the snout 25 for cleaning, or for personal issue where the headset is worn by several users. The snout 25 couples the boom 8 to a microphone transducer 24 (Fig. 3). The support 10 (Fig. 2) is of moulded plastics and has a tubular extension 11 within which a metal tube 12 is a tight fit. The tube 12 is capable of rotation through about 200 degrees, determined by a stop pin 13 movable in a slot 14 in the support 10. At the outer end of tube 12 is a part-spherical metal member 15 which fits into a cavity 16 (Fig. 3) in the mounting member 5. The arrangement is such that the support 10 can be moved through a limited arc B-B (in use in the vertical plane) and can also be moved through a smaller arc (C-C), Fig. 3c (not shown), perpendicular to the arc B-B. Movement through the arc C-C is less stiff than movement through the arc B-B or rotational movement. The sound exit 17 of the earphone may be shaped for insertion in the user's ear but preferably is in use covered by a removable eartip 18 (e.g. of P.V.C.) which merely rests on the ear. The earphone has a red dot 22 (see Fig. 2b, not shown), which the user arranges to coincide with a cut-out 23 in the eartip 18. In use, the sound exit may be swung slightly outwards from the user's ear. Where, as shown, two mounting members 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are provided, only one carries a microphone.
