Abstract

Ammonia; ammonium phosphate.-Ammonia is purified from phosphine to render it suitable for catalytic oxidation to produce nitrogen oxides, by passing it through charcoal or other porous carbonaceous material, which may be activated by impregnating with a metal compound, for instance silver nitrate, and drying, with or without subsequent reduction in hydrogen. By this treatment, at a comparatively low temperature, the phosphine is oxidized and ammonium phosphate is formed and absorbed in the catalyst, from which it is removed by washing. The apparatus described consists of two chambers 3, 3<1> connected so as to be used alternately, and each containing a removable open cylinder 18 carrying the catalytic mass on permeable screens 19 within a steam jacket 10 through which pass air-pipes 11 secured in header plates 12, 13. When the catalyst in one chamber is exhausted, the chamber is cut out by means of the valves shown, and steam is admitted to the jacket by a pipe 17, and air to an annular chamber 14 by a pipe 16. The air traverses the pipes 11 and passes through the catalyst to expel absorbed ammonia. The cover 20 is then removed, and the cylinder 18 lifted out so that the charcoal can be washed or replaced.
