Abstract

136,316. Carlaw & Sons, D., and Carlaw, D. Jan. 2, 1919, Envelopes, making.-For enabling devices such as the carriage or the gummer of an envelope folding and gumming machine to be readily disconnected from the driving-mechanism, one member of the mechanism is formed with an open jaw which hooks over a pin on another member of the mechanism and is normally closed by a releasable gate. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the eccentric rod F for rocking the operating-lever E of the carriage B is formed with an open jaw 2 for engaging a pin 3 on the lever E, engagement being maintained by means of a sliding gate 6a formed on a plunger 6 which can be raised by means of a knob 9. The jaw is formed on a member 1 which is screwed on the rod F and secured by a nut 4. The plunger 6 is arranged in a handle 5 on the member 1, and is pressed outwards by means by a spring 7 arranged between a screw collar 8 on the handle and a collar 6b on the plunger. The pin 3 is adjustably mounted in a slot E<2> in the lever E, and is secured by a mit, a collar 3<a> on the pin engaging the inside of the lever. The jaw 2 passes between the collar 3a and a nut 12 on the pin. When it is desired to arrest the carriage B, the knob 9 is raised and the rod F is lifted to disengage the jaw 2 from the pin 3. In the connexion shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the gate for closing the jaw 2 is formed by a rotatable two-part collar 14, 14a arranged in a recess 15 at the bottom of the jaw. The part 14 is secured at the sides to washers 19, 20 which, with an intermediate bushing 21, are passed over the pin and are prevented from moving laterally by the collar 3<a> and a nut on the pin. The washer 20 is provided with a handle 22 which can move between stops 23, 24 on the member 1. The part 14<a> is formed with a groove 17 engaging a pin 16 on the member 1. When the handle 22 is set in the position shown, the part 14 is in register with the jaw, and the rod F can be disconnected from the pin. When the handle is set in contact with the stop 23, the part 14a closes the jaw and prevents the rod from being disconnected. The bushing 21 is formed with lubricating-holes. The parts 14, 14<a> may be formed from the same ring, the groove 17 being turned before the parts are separated.
