Abstract

136,309. Alexander, A. E., (United Filters Corporation). Dec. 30, 1918. Rotary filters.-In rotary disk filters, means for inflating the filtering-units are provided in combination with scrapers for removing the cakes. A tank is used, one portion of which forms a single receptacle for all the disks, while the other portion is divided into chambers each of which accommodates one of the disks. The disks may be built up of separately detachable sections. As shown ir. Fig. 4, a disk section 1 comprises a rigid frame holding a body of wirecloth, corrugated iron, vitrified tile, &c., and surrounded by a filter-bag, the loose edges of which are lapped over the outer rim and held by angle-iron clamps 9. Clamps 5 on radial bolts 4 press on the clamps 9, the pressure being communicated to a nipple 8 through which the filtrate is passed from the section to one of a series of pipes 2 mounted on the axle B. The inner ends of the bolts 4 screw into a spider collar and press on clamps 7 which hold the pipes 2 in position. The filtrate passes away at either end through a ported piece 11, Fig. 5, tapered within a housing 12 having chambers 23 with separate outlets for filtrate and wash water, and an inlet 24 for compressed air. The tank of the apparatus is formed on one side by a quartercylindrical part D, Fig. 3, and on the other by a series of recesses E, each of which accommodates a single disk. The cakes formed on the disks are sprayed with water from pipes 19 as they rise from the tank, and they are removed by flexible scrapers 33, which direct the solid matter to fall between the recesses E to a receptacle or conveyer below. The material to be treated is supplied through a pipe 18. Pipes 16, triangular in section and located between the filter disks, allow of a circulation overflow. The tank may be provided with a cover which may be formed of roll curtains. In a modification, the pipes 2 are formed within the shaft B or replaced by a single conduit within the shaft.
