Abstract

1362822 Spraying underwater surfaces COLEBRAND Ltd 17 Aug 1971 38629/71 Heading B2L Apparatus for spray coating underwater surfaces comprises a shield 11 having an elongate opening 22 and which in use is filled with air entering through a pipe 15 and exiting between the margins 22A and the surface to be coated, a spray nozzle of known type being provided which produces a spray elongate in the same direction as the shield. The opening 22 is spaced from the surface by wheels 31 and either of wheels 32 only one of which contacts the surface at any one time, e.g. if the shield moves upwardly then the upper wheel is in contact so that the applied coating is not damaged. A baffle may be provided on the outside of the shield so that the stream of bubbles is diverted and the work can be inspected more easily as the coating is applied. Up to three spray heads can be provided in the enclosure. Flaps may be provided adjacent one longitudinal edge of the shield and operable in the same manner as the wheels 32 the flaps providing an economy in the required air flow. Also pivoted flaps 64, 65 may be provided (Fig. 6) so that uneven surfaces may be negotiated by the shield. As shown in Fig. 8 the spray shield is mounted for movement on a bar 81. The bar 81 is urged towards the surface by means of torsion bars 82 which are urged in the direction of the arrow by means of a pneumatic motor 89. The framework 83 supporting the motor is mounted on the surface by means of suction cups 85A-D which are mounted on rods 84 journalled in the frame 83. This framework can be caused to "walk" to the left as shown in the figure by retaining the force exerted on the torsion arms 82 and releasing the vacuum in the cups 85C and 85D. These cups remain orientated in the same plane by the action of a chain and sprocket 86, 87 as they move, with the frame 83 over the still affixed suction cups 85A, 85B. In place of the cups 85 suitable electromagnets may be provided. In a further embodiment the spray shield may be urged against the surface by means of an electrically or pneumatically driven propellor.
