Abstract

1362673 Internal shoe drum brakes; adjusting for wear GIRLING Ltd 23 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 39443/71 Addition to 1199191 Heading F2E In an improvement or modification of the invention claimed in Specification 1,199,191 and with particular regard to Figs. 3-5, thereof a coil spring 12 prestressed in torsion and in compression acts on the pawl 10 on the one hand to bias it to rotate in a sense to increase the length of the strut 6 and on the other hand to urge the pawl 10 into engagement with the ratchet 8A, the rotational force applied to the pawl 10 by the spring 12 being intermediate the force required to overcome the frictional resistance to rotation of the strut parts 7, 9 when the strut 6 is subjected to load by the shoe return springs S and the force required to effect such rotation when the shoe return spring load is relieved by actuation of the service brake 1. The pawl 10 and a cross-pull lever 120 of a handbrake mechanism are mounted on a shaft 121 which has its lower end supported in a bracket 122 and which is surrounded by the spring 12; the pawl 10 has an offset portion 10C bearing against the lever 120, to provide a rocking fulcrum for the pawl 10 about an axis extending transversely to the rotational axis of the pawl 10.
