Abstract

1362640 Electrophonic musical instruments CHICAGO MUSICAL INSTRUMENT CO 12 Dec 1972 [27 April 1972] 57294/72 Heading G5J An electrophonic musical instrument is arranged to fill in, when a melody note and accompanying chord are played, notes that are octavely related to the notes of the chord and are 3 to 11 semitones below the melody note. As described, the instrument has a first series of key switches 23 operated by the accompaniment manual and a second series of key switches 25 operated by the melody manual. Each tone generator (of which two, 15 and 16 are shown) may be gated to an output system 11 either by a switch 43 actuated by the corresponding key or by a signal from a corresponding one of transistor switches 27. When a chord is played on the accompaniment manual, keying potential is applied to the emitters of all the transistors corresponding to all the notes of the chord in all octaves. When a melody note is played, earth is connected to the base of the transistor corresponding to a note 7 semitones below that played so that if the emitter of that transistor has keying potential from a switch 23 this potential will pass to open the corresponding gate 18. The chain of resistors 41 ensures that the bases of the four transistors on either side will be sufficiently earthy to pass keying potential, thus allowing any notes marked by switches 23 and lying 3 to 11 semitones below the melody note to sound.
