Abstract
136,263. Holslag, C. J. Dec. 11, 1918. Accessories; helmets.-A head and face protector or mask for wear by workers employed in arc welding and like processes, comprises a curved top 1 merging into sides 4, 5, a front 8 having an opening in which is a holder 9 having a series of light-reducing shields consisting of three superposed glasses, a lower front part 17 inclining inwards and provided with a stiffened lower edge 18 to which may be attached a flexible strip 19, and a back portion 15 integral with the top. The top may be furnished with a wire-gauze ventilator 22. The device is made of light material, such as papier mÔchÚ treated with black insulating and refractory paint. The exposed edges are preferably reinforced with rattan. In use, the device is usually worn over a reversed cap, as shown in Fig. 1, the head and neck of the worker being protected from the heat and light and also from accidents due to falling bodies, while he is able to watch his work through coloured glasses. When the wearer is not actually at work, the protector may be tilted backwards and the flap thrown upwards, allowing him to look under the edge 18, while he is still protected from the glare of adjoining machines and from falling bodies. In addition, the inside glass is wiped free from moisture by passing over the top of the cap.
