In an open-end spinning machine yarn is drawn from the spinning chamber by draw off rollers 10 and 11. Roller 10 is driven and positionally fixed while free roller 11 is mounted on an arm swingable to maintain a reserve length of yarn for piecing up and to maintain driven contact with roller 10. The arm carrying roller 11 is actuable by rotating its pivot shaft or by a cylinder 81 or 56, Fig. 6 and 4, a push rod 43, Fig. 3, a cam device 54 Fig. 4 or by a pull cord (23), Fig. 1 (not shown). Roller Loading, Brake and Traverse. The rollers 10 and 11 may be biassed together by a spring, e.g. a tension spring, a "clothes peg" type spring 78, Fig. 6, or a leaf spring 39 or 53 Figs. 3 and 4. An automatic brake lever 88, Fig. 6, may act on roller 11 when it disengages roller 10. A traverse rod 36 may oscilate the yarn on the rollers 10 and 11 to prevent localised wear. Stop Motion. A yarn tension sensing switch 26 activates the stopping of fibre feed to the spinning rotor and may also initiate feed back of yarn by operating the release of the reserve length to be sucked back into the rotor. Yarn take up may also be stopped by a member 87 Fig. 6, being inserted between a bobbin 12 and its feed roller 16. The tension sensing member: 27 may also serve to clamp the yarn end against a member, 28 Fig. 3. Rotor Bearing, Fig. 4, the rotor shaft 5 may have plastics, sleeves 46 to bear on the edge of supporting disc pairs 29. Collars 48 lie adjacent the poles of a permanent magnet which locate the shaft 5 in the cusp of the discs 29 and also locate it axially.
