Abstract

1362422 Rotary screen thickener J M VOITH GmbH 5 Aug 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 36777/71 Heading BID In a rotary screen thickener for paper pulp suspensions &c., a pump supplies the suspension to a nozzle 3 which directs it through a slot on to the cylindrical screen 2 at an angle thereto between 30 and 90 degrees, a preliminary dewatering taking place at the point of impingement and the cake formed thereby being washed off by the suspension behind which is thrown tangentially from the screen. One or more baffles 14, 14' may redirect this suspension on to the screen to effect similar dewatering steps and the suspension which reaches the surface of suspension 6 in trough 1 creates turbulence to wash the screen clean again. The screen rotates through the trough, where conventional filtration occurs, water being discharged at both ends of the screen and filter cake accumulating thereon and being removed by rotary couch roll 10 and blade 11. Concentrated suspension is discharged over weir 7. Rubber skirt 12 prevents splashing of roll 10, and resilient lip 13 on nozzle 3 wears down to conform to the screen periphery. In use, greasy waste paper pulp would be directed on to the screen at over 2 metres per second and lightly crushed unground cellulose suspension at over 7 metres per second.
