Abstract

1362111 Removing lead deposits from steam stills PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 29 March 1972 14652/72 Heading F2N [Also in Division B3] In a still 10, used for steam distilling tetraalkyl-lead from a mixture of tetra-alkyl-lead and lead particles suspended in water, deposits 27a, 27b of lead which build up on the still walls are removed by a fluid jet from nozzle 9. The fluid may be water, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, mineral acid solution or suspensions of sand and other solids in water. Initially, an area of the inner surface of a still wall may be cleared of lead deposit, e.g. by chiselling or by directing the fluid jet against the deposit overlying this area for a sufficient period of time. Subsequently, the jet is directed against this cleared area until adjacent deposits are dislodged to expose a further area, against which the jet is then directed. This process continues, directing the jet at freshly exposed areas until the still is substantially free of lead deposits.
