Abstract
1361830 Commutators for dynamo-electric machines GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 41613/71 Heading H2A A dynamo-electric machine comprises a commutator including a base member having two portions 22, 24 of different diameter, the larger diameter portion 24 having a planar end surface 24a to which the ends of the commutator segments 18 are adhesively secured. The base member may be of metal such as aluminium, cast iron, steel, brass, bronze or alloys of these metals. A ceramic or reinforced organic insulating coating is applied to the surface of the base member. A preferred material is plasma sprayed alumina. Alternatively, the base member may be made of a non-metallic material such as a ceramic or a reinforced plastics material, e.g. phenolic asbestos, polyimide glass or epoxy glass. The segments 18 may be made of copper, zinc coated copper or aluminium. The adhesive, which is electrically non-conductive and secures the segments to the surface 24a and to the surface 22a of portion 22 of the base member, may be an epoxy or polyimide material. The enlarged diameter portion 24 of the base member prevents mechanical damage to those ends of the segments remote from the rotor winding.
