Abstract

1361632 Decorative coatings M LADNEY Jnr 3 Sept 1971 41179/71 Heading B2E A method of applying a decorative finsh to a plastics article comprises: applying to the article a base coat of a hardenable, filmforming, organic resin solution which, when dried, forms on the article, without attacking the plastics from which the article is made, an adherent, solid, uniform, smooth glossy film which is adapted to accept a layer of vaporised aluminium; vacuum depositing a layer of aluminium on the base coat; applying to the vacuum metallised base coat a first top coat of a hardenable, film-forming, organic resin solution which, when dried, forms over the vacuum metallised base coat, without attacking it, an adherent. solid, transparent film which remains colourless and transparent at ambient temperatures of the article and which is a barrier for a second top coat specified hereafter; and thereafter spraying over the first top coat a second top coat of a hardenable, film-forming, organic resin solution which, when hardened, forms a hard, solid, continuous, transparent film which adheres to the first top coat without attacking the top coated vacuum metallised base coat and which has greater resistance to abrasion than the first top coat and remains transparent and colourless at ambient temperatures, the last mentioned organic resin solution containing a solvent system for the resin which if applied directly to the surface of the vacuum deposited aluminium and/or the plastics surface of the article would attack the surface(s), each of the coatings being hardenable by drying after application and before further processing of the article, said last mentioned solution including a solvent system containing at least two solvents of substantially different evaporation rates, one of the solvents being such that it would attack the first top coat if allowed to remain thereon but which has an evaporation rate such that it substantially completely evaporates in the spray and another solvent which does not attack the first top coat and has a slower evaporation rate whereby it reaches the first top coat. The second top coat is preferably nitrocellulose mixed with epoxidised soya bean oil/polyester resin, but may be vinyl, acrylic, urethane, epoxy or nitrocellulose resins, or melamine, acrylic or styrenated alkyds.
