Abstract

1361479 Delivering individual articles INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 25 Nov 1971 [29 Jan 1971] 54696/71 Heading B8S An article (e.g. semi-conductor module) handling apparatus for sequentially delivering articles M to a processing (e.g. testing) station 14 comprises a plurality of multi-channel article holding trays 45a-c, 49a-49c in each channel of which a plurality of articles are stored, a lower storage area 36 for storing a plurality of adjacent and similarly oriented loaded trays 45a-45c from which the articles are fed one by one to an unloading station, and means for moving each tray to an upper storage area 37 once it has been unloaded. The leading tray in the area 36 is gravitationally unloaded channel by channel by a shuttle bar 56 which has an aperture therein aligned with each channel in turn of the leading tray, a flexible guide element for the articles, extending from the said aperture to a loading station in a turntable 14 at the processing station. The trays in the area 36 ride on a ball track slide 46 and are constantly pressed towards the unloading position by a member 47. Upon a tray reaching the unloading position an air ram 53 releases spring elements which normally retain the articles in the channels of that tray and the articles are ready to be unloaded, a photo-cell device detecting each empty channel and causing indexing of the shuttle bar across the tray. The photo-cell device also senses an empty tray and controls an air ram 65 which lifts the tray from the low level area 36 to the upper storage area 37 which is similar to the area 36. The articles on the turntable 14 are moved through various processing stations prior to passing along categorized discharge paths to associated loading apparatuses which are each of construction similar to the unloading apparatus, the trays being filled from above whilst stored in an upper level area.
