Abstract

1337800 Liquid-transferring apparatus ROHE SCIENTIFIC CORP 6 Dec 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 56527/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for transferring samples of liquid in succession from individual containers in a group of sample containers to individual containers in a group of discharge containers, comprises a platform supporting the two groups of containers, the containers in each group being supported in parallel rows on the platform, means for imparting incremental movement to the platform in two directions at right angles to bring the containers of the two groups successively to a take-up station and to a discharge station respectively, a carriage movable from a position above the take-up station to a position above the discharge station and back again, a sampling tip on the carriage, means for imparting upward and downward movement to the tip to permit it to withdraw liquid from containers at the take-up station and discharge liquid into containers at the discharge station, a pump for effecting suction of liquid into the tip and subsequent discharge of liquid from the tip, an automatic diluter, having a micrometer screw adjustment, for adding a predetermined quantity of a second liquid to each sample picked up by the tip prior to its discharge into a discharge container, programme controlled means for effecting sequential and coordinated operation of the platform, the carriage, the tip and the automatic diluter, and a washing station arranged to direct a plurality of jets of water at the tip on its return trip to the take-up station and a drying station between the washing station and the take-up station arranged to direct an air blast at the tip. As shown the sampling tip 140 is conveyed on a carriage 152 movable laterally on rails 148, 149 and movable vertically by chain 157. The tip moves from a sampling station 135 to a discharge station 136. Tubes 112, 114..in row A in tray 110 and 122, 124..in row W in tray 120 are successively brought to stations 135, 136 by front-toback movement of the trays; when rows A and W have been dealt with a sideways movement of the trays allows the tubes in rows B and X to be brought to the operative positions and so on. The position of washing and drying stations passed on the return journey of the tip is indicated at W and D.
