Abstract

1361437 Corrugating YORKSHIRE IMPERIAL METALS Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 56740/71 Heading B3E Longitudinal or helical corrugations are produced in a tube by passing it axially over a rotated toothed mandrel and engaging the outside of the tube with a plurality of freely rotatable toothed rolls. The roll head shown consists of two spaced walls each having an aperture 2 about which are located pivots 3 for pairs of rockers 4, 4a, 5 each pair supporting a toothed roll 10. The rockers are linked by adjustable length rods 9, 9a, 9b, and rocker 5 has an arm 6 movable by actuator 15 as far as adjustable stop 16. The mandrel 11 is axially fixed, and rotatable by drive shaft 12. In use, the tube is located on the mandrel, and actuator 15 extended to engage the rolls 10 with the tube. The mandrel is then rotated, and the tube moved axially by a freely rotatable drawbench gripper. The roll axes may be parallel to the mandrel axis, or inclined. In the case of helical corrugations, the tube diameter is suitable for producing the same number of corrugations as the mandrel has teeth, but for longitudinal corrugations the tube diameter is suitable for producing three more corrugations than the mandrel has teeth, so that the tube wall forms a lobe between adjacent points of contact with the mandrel. Each roll 10 and the mandrel have co-prime numbers of teeth.
