Abstract

1361300 Sterilization ENERGY SCIENCES Inc 25 July 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 34730/72 Heading A2D Bulk sterilization involving selectively destroying micro-organisms in a medium without effecting substantial physical or chemical damage to the medium comprises disposing the medium in a region, generating pulsed monochromatic electron beam energy and uniformly directing the electron beam energy to the region to irradiate the medium, and adjusting the pulses to produce an irradiation dose within 0.1 to 10 megarads and with a dose rate greater than 10<SP>7</SP> rads per sec. The energy is preferably adjusted to a value in excess of 1 Mev, and the dose range preferably to between 1 and 4.5 megarads. The sterilization may be applied to the treatment of blood, foodstuffs, meats and milk.
