Abstract

Continuous destruction of disease vectors, e.g. viruses, bacteria and parasites, in sludge from effluent treatment are continually destroyed by transporting the sludge in a layer in intense turbulence; and exposing it to high energy electron radiation, partic. 300-800, esp. 400 KeV, in a layer of 5-30 pref. 10-20 mm. thickness. The use of a thin layer of sludge in turbulent flow enables an electron beam to much lower energy, and therefore lower cost, to be used, with minimum shielding.
