Abstract

1361246 Oxidation catalysts NIPPON SHOKUBAI KAGAKU KOGYO CO Ltd 21 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 49009/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalytic compositions supported on an inert carrier containing oxygen and molybdenum, vanadium and copper and at least one of chromium and tungsten in the atomic ratio of Mo:V:Cu:Cr:W of 12:2-14:1-6:0-4:0-12, providing Cr+W is not O, are used for the preparation of unsaturated carboxylic acids by the oxidation of unsaturated aldehydes. Inert porous carriers have a surface area of at most 2 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a porosity of 30 to 65% with at least 90% of the pores having a pore diameter of from 50 to 1500 microns, and alphaalumina, silicon carbide, pumice, silica, zirconia, and titanum oxide or mixtures thereof may be used. An example describes the preparation of a catalyst by adding an aqueous solution of ammonium bichromate and copper nitrate to an aqueous solution of ammonium molybdate, paratungstate and metavanadate, evaporating in a carrier and calcining at 350-600‹C.
