Abstract

1360990 Adjusting vehicle height AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 8 Oct 1971 [8 Oct 1970] 47977/70 Heading B7D A levelling valve, which controls the supply of liquid to a liquid filled strut forming part of the suspension system of the vehicle, includes a regulating device which damps movement of the valve spool 20 away from its mean position but allows free movement of the spool 20 when returning to the mean position. The valve includes a body 10 which is mounted on the vehicle body and a spool 20 having a lug 31 which is connected to the axle by a flexible member (not shown). The spool 20 controls the flow of liquid between port 18, which is connected to a liquid filled strut of the suspension, and ports 17 and 19 which are connected to exhaust (e.g. a reservoir) and a liquid supply source respectively. The spool 20 has an extension 29 which is connected to a flexible diaphragm 35 which separates two liquid filled chambers 33, 34. The chambers 33, 34 are connected by a passage 44, the ends of the passage being closed by spring loaded plates 38, 40 when the spool 20 is in its mean position as shown. The passage 44 is also connected to a source of liquid supply 45. The plates 38, 40 have restricted orifices 42, 43 respectively. The arrangement is such that when the spool so moves away from its mean position, e.g. to the left, liquid flows from chamber 34 to chamber 33 via restricted orifice 43 so that the movement of the spool 20 is damped. When the spool 20 returns to its mean position liquid flows freely through the passage 44 because plate 38 is held open by projection 24 on the spool 20 and plate 40 is opened against the action of spring 41 by the pressure of liquid flowing through the passage 44. Thus the return movement of the spool 20 is undamped. Movement of the spool to the right operates the device in a similar manner. In a modification (not shown) the restricted orifices 42, 43 may be replaced by a single restricted orifice in the diaphragm 35.
