Abstract

1360966 A back-rest for a bed GEORGE ELLISON Ltd 3 Aug 1971 [13 June 1970] 28744/70 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] A back-rest 21 is pivotally connected to a head frame for a bed through a locking mechanism 15 which is slidably mounted between two vertical parallel rails 13 of the head-frame and is releasably locked to the rails. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the locking mechanism comprises a housing 16 on which the upper rail 22 of the back-rest is pivoted and in which a spindle 17 provided with sliding shoes 19 is rotatably mounted. The sliding shoes have transverse grooves 19a in their end faces such that when the grooves are in alignment with the rails 13 sliding of the housing on the rails can be effected and when the grooves extend transversely to the rails, the housing is frictional held against sliding. In the second form of locking mechanism shown in Fig. 6, blocks 26 are slidably mounted on the vertical rails, the blocks being locked against sliding by a spindle 25 extending through horizontal bores in the blocks and frictionally engaging the rails. The spindle is formed with a pair of flat portions such that on rotation of the spindle the flat portions are brought into alignment with the rails to allow sliding of the blocks on the rails.
