1347012 Consolidating surface of railway track ballast F PLASSER [trading as FRANZ PLASSER BAHNBAUMASCHINEN] 17 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 59892/70 Heading E1G The surface of the ballast bed in two adjacent sleeper intervals or cribs 8, 8' is consolidated simultaneously by providing vertically adjustable vibratable ballast surface engaging tools 9 forming a consolidator unit 11, 11' for each rail of the track, each unit comprising two groups of tools longitudinally and relatively displaceable on the chassis of a railway vehicle, each group including a plurality of tools operable on opposite sides of a rail in one sleeper crib and the tools being capable of being lowered onto the ballast without penetrating it when the vehicle is stationary. One group in a unit may be fixed while the other, e.g. the leading group as shown, is longitudinally movable and the position of the tools in each group may be in dividually adjustable (Fig. 4 not shown). The adjusting movements of the groups and tools may be effected either manually or by hydraulic drives, mechanical locking devices being provided to retain the adjusted positions. The location control system for the vehicle described and claimed in Application 59894/70 may be employed to ensure that the consolidation tools are automatically lowered into the sleeper intervals, a sensor 18 detecting the occurence of the sleeper or rail fastening being used in conjunction with a pulse generating odometer 19. Crib end consolidators 15 may be provided to consolidate the ballast outside the sleeper ends. All the consolidator tools are raised and lowered together by a hydraulic piston and cylinder system 10.
