Abstract

Rotary furnaces.-A furnace for sintering concentrates, or distilling shale or other material consists of a rotatable drum with removable peripheral pans or chambers 4 for the material to be treated. The pans are mounted in radial compartments open at their inner ends, where they fit a stationary exhaust conduit 2 having a grated opening 5 corresponding in extent to the ignition and burning zones. As the drum rotates, the pans are in succession filled at 10, ignited by a fire 11 having a grated air inlet 12, carried through a burning zone 13 to a discharge funnel 9, and on through a cooling zone to the feed point again. Alternatively, the apparatus may work under forced draught, the zone 13 being then fitted with a pressure air supply cover a, b. The drum may be divided longitudinally by one or more partitions, the pans being then doubled, trebled, &c. in number and correspondingly reduced in size.
