Abstract

1360611 Tobacco-smoke filter manufacture MOLINS Ltd 30 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 31802/70 Heading A2C [Also in Division D1] A cigarette filter is made by extruding filter material, such as a plasticized cellulose acetate tow, round a mandrel to form a continuous hollow filter element 2 while shaping the outer surface with a cyclically moving die surface to form, as a repeated pattern, one or more relieved parts such as flutes 12 which in the final assembly will be spaced from a surrounding wrapper 8 so as to form at least one axial passage sealingly separated by land portions 10. The bore 4 of the hollow element 2 is closed by a plug 6 which may be injected at intervals through a hollow mandrel during the forming operation or may be inserted subsequently into the cut-off element. The die comprises four identical wheels 22 which are rotated in synchronism, and are each provided with peripheral grooves to form the flutes 12 and with two diametrically opposed cut-away portions 26 to form the land portions. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the relieved part is of circular external cross-section and forms, in the completed filter element, an annular space 32. Dimples 42 are formed in the wrapper 34 to space it from the surface of the filter element. A plug 36 is provided with axially extending ribs 38 and abuts a fibre glass fire barrier wad 44. The element is connected to a cigarette 48 by an aluminium strip 50.
