1360281 Die assembly for diamond synthesis UKRAINSKY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY KONSTRUKTORSKO TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SVERKHTVERDYKH MATERIALOV I INSTRUMENTA GOSPLANA UKRAINSKOI SSR and INSTITUT FIZIKI VYSOKIKH DAVLENY AKADEMII NAUKS SSR 13 May 1971 14015/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division Cl] High-pressure, high-temperature apparatus, for use particularly in the synthesis of artificial diamonds and cubic boric nitride, comprises a pair of dies 1 (preferably of tungsten-cobalt alloy) with opposed working surfaces each formed with a part spherical cavity and having a land around the cavity which slopes from the rim of the cavity away from the opposing die. The ratio of the radius of curvature (R) of each cavity to its diameter (d) is not less than 0.75:1 and preferably not greater than 1:1. The ratio of the external diameter (D) of the die to the diameter of the cavity (d) is preferably between 1.7 and 1.8:1. Each die may be surrounded by a steel ring 2. In use a sample 4 in a container of lithographic store tank a pyrophyllite is placed between the dies, heated by means of a graphite heater and subjected to pressure in excess of 40 kilobars. The material 3 of the container flows to fill the gap between the dies.
