Abstract

1360096 Regulating; automatic control of toner concentration XEROX CORP 28 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970 (2)] 45050/71 Headings G2H and G3R [Also in Division G1] In a xerographic reproducing apparatus a resistance strain gauge 20' is cantilever mounted to the inner wall 21 of a reservoir for developer material including toner powder and carrier powder which material is agitated by a multiblade rotor 25, the resulting bending of the cantilever being a function of material viscosity and therefore of toner concentration, so that an electrical signal from the gauge is representative of toner concentration and may be applied to sensing unit (30) Fig.3 (not shown), including a bridge circuit, and controlling the opening of a door on a toner dispenser to release a measured amount of toner into the reservoir. In an alternative embodiment Figs.5, 6 (not shown) a transducer (27) is arranged to be responsive to the torque exerted on the shafts of augers (28, 29) and a multiblade rotor (46) situated in the developer reservoir (47) and driven by a motor (26). A further embodiment Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) utilizes the sensed torque signal to control a toner dispenser (50) to maintain toner concentration within a predetermined range.
