Abstract

1359978 Easy-open can ends AMERICAN CAN CO 26 March 1973 [17 April 1972] 14402/73 Heading B8D [Also in Division B2] A non-metallic protective coating 50, which is provided on the interior surface of an easyopen sheet metal can end 10 and which is interrupted by a removable panel-defining score 18, is repaired by a non-metallic coat 56, which only partially fills the void defined by the score and presents an exposed concave surface. The can end is provided additionally with an exterior non-metallic protective coating 52, both coatings 50 and 52 being applied to an aluminium web prior to punching out can end blanks which are subsequently shaped and scored. The repair coat may be an acrylic resin, epoxy ester, or oil-modified alkyd applied by an electro-coating process or epoxy esters, modified epoxy, or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers plus urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde plus an epoxy resin applied by a spraying process. The can end is provided with an opening tab 30 riveted to the external can end side and a non-rupturable shallower score 16 in the can end interior surface inboard of the score 18. In modifications, the can end is of tin-free steel or tin-plated steel, Fig. 5 (not shown).
