Abstract

1359798 Coated threads BAYER AG 15 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 57978/72 Heading B2E [Also in division D1] Sewing thread is dressed by treating with a solution or emulsion of (a) a polycarbonatepolydimethyl siloxane block copolymer consisting of from 8-35% by weight of polycarbonate segments of the general formula in which R' represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted with an inert substituent, R" is a substituent independent of the others and consists of an alkyl radical or a halogen atom, p is an integer of from 1 to 7 and a is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4 and 55-92% by weight of polydimethyl siloxane segments having an average chain length of 15-90 dimethyl siloxane units, individual segments being linked by aryl-O-Si bonds, and optionally, (b) polydiorganosiloxanes. Numerous suitable block copolymers are listed. The polydiorganosiloxanes are preferably present in amount 100 parts by weight per 5-50 parts of the block copolymer. Suitable solvents are trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, methyl chloroform, chlorobenzene or mixtures of these. When applied as an emulsion the component(s) are dissolved in a non-polar solvent such as toluene, xylene, or petroleum hydrocarbons, optionally mixed with trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene and the solutions emulsified in water with the addition the usual stabilizing agents, preferably a commercial partly hydrolised polyvinyl acetate. The threads are preferably of polyester fibres, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, but blends of polyester fibres with other natural and/or synthetic fibres may also be used. Polyester-free yarns such as nylon and acrylics may also be treated by the method.
