Abstract
1359662 Data transmission HONEYWELL INFORMATION SYSTEMS Inc 28 July 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 35534/71 Heading G4A [Also in Division H4] A data communications controller 5 is connected by sub-channels 6a-6n to terminal devices 11a-11n. Normally the sub-channels are scanned in sequence by a first scanner, but, when a priority switch is closed, one of a number of combinations of sub-channels can be chosen, using a selector switch, which combinations have priority over the others and are scanned by a second scanner. The priority switch is closed when one or more of the terminals requests such action and when no priority requests are received normal scanning is resumed. A data processor 1 is connected to a memory controller 2 and a memory 3 (e.g. magnetic core), and controller 2 is connected by multiplexer 4 to controller 5 and the sub-channels 6a-6n (e.g. 32 of them). Each sub-channel is connected to a terminal device 11a-11n, e.g. magnetic tape handler, paper tape or punched card readers by a telephone line. The controller 5 includes the first and second scanners which are counters (Fig. 3a, not shown) and a decoding matrix which supplies enable signals to the subchannels. The second scanner can scan either 2, 4, 8, or 16 sub-channels as priority though if an odd number, e.g. 3 or 5 is required to have priority a modified system (Fig. 7, not shown) may be used.
