Abstract

1341686 Digital computers BURROUGHS CORP 31 July 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 37088/70 Heading G4A A central data processor 11 polls a number of terminal stations 23 in address sequence and each terminal 23 can have its address changed by itself or by the central processor, for example, so that an urgent request can be dealt with out of normal sequence or so that a terminal station is not interrupted. The system.-The processor 11 is a digital computer, having input/output devices 13 to 21, connected via communication link 22, e.g. a telephone line, to a number of terminals 23. Each terminal includes a digital computer which performs its own operations off line and communicates with processor 11 for message transfer. The system may operate in real time (on line) for a commercial application. The terminal (Fig. 2, not shown).-This comprises a computer having a read only memory holding microinstructions, a magnetic disc memory, a keyboard and a printer, a line discipline processor (preferably a digital computer) and a buffer store connected to line 22 via a modem 25. This is a modified version of the terminal described in U.S.A. Specification 3,564,509. Operation.-The processor 11 can send a poll inquiry message to each terminal inquiring whether the terminal has a message to send or a select inquiry message indicating that the processor 11 has a message to send. If the terminal cannot receive the message, e.g. it is operating off line, its line discipline processor sends a not ready message to processor 11. The latter either retransmits its message or polls the next terminal in sequence. Although the system operates in a multi drop mode, i.e. all terminals and the processor receive all messages sent, only messages with the correct addresses are responded to. When a terminal changes its address it notifies the processor 11 and changes to an address preferably different from that of the other terminals. In one embodiment the poll enquiry and select enquiry addresses may be changed independently and in another a terminal may have an additional address for a broadcast mode where a number of terminals have the same address. Other features include parity checking and serial data transfer.
