1359633 Sulphur-curable elastomeric tetrapolymers; rubber compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 17 June 1971 56458/73 Divided out of 1359039 Addition to 1195625 Headings C3P and C3Q A sulphur-curable elastomer comprises an amorphous polymer comprising (a) 25%-75% by wt. of ethylene units; (b) units derived from a C 20 -C 62 diester of a dicarboxylic acid and a 2-(hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkenyl)-5-norbornene, the amount of this monomer used in the preparation of the polymer being 0À01-0À1 moles/kg. of polymer and the units thus introduced not exceeding 15% by wt. of the polymer; (c) sufficient units derived from a non- conjugated diolefin containing only one readily polymerizable double bond to provide 0À1-4À0 moles of units/kg. of polymer; and (d) propylene units. The polymers have a saturated chain with pendant double bonds in the units (c) and branching points produced by the units (b). They are prepared by means of an organic solvent-soluble co-ordination catalyst. An example describes the continuous copolymerization of ethylene, propylene, 1,4-hexadiene and bis - (5 - norbornene - 2 - methanol)adipate using a VCl 4 /i-Bu 2 AlCl catalyst. The polymers may be compounded with chain-unsaturated elastomers, e.g. natural rubber and/or neoprene, and cured by conventional means.
