Abstract

1359490 Colour television tubes HITACHI Ltd 14 Sept 1971 42866/71 Heading H1D A method of manufacturing a colour TV tube fluorescent screen in which phosphor dots are formed using a shadow mask includes applying a photosensitive coating, e.g. pva. with ammonium dichromate, on the inner faceplate surface; exposing to light through the shadow mask perforations and removing portions not exposed to light, shrinking the remaining spots to reduce their area, "shrinking" meaning shrinking of the complete spots, rather than chemical removal of their edges, waterproofing the shrunk spots, applying a non-luminous substance (e.g. graphite) over the entire inner surface, removing the shrunk spots with their non-luminous coating; and thereafter forming phosphor dots corresponding to the shrunk spots by light exposure through the perforations of the shadow mask. Shrinking may be by treating the spots, while still wet and swollen, with a suitable organic or inorganic salt, e.g. 5% by wt. ammonium sulphate or sodium acetate for about 1 minute. The spots are restored when wetted by water or an aqueous solution so are waterproofed by heating to 80‹ to 100‹ C. Preferably, 0.2% by wt. of a photosensitive bonding agent for pva., e.g. ammonium bichromate, may be incorporated in the photosensitive material, the shrunk spots being irradiated with uv. or electrons to waterproof same. Dimensions of dots and mask perforations are given. The screen is cleaned, ammonia in an aqueous solution of potassium silicate with 5% graphite to prepare solution of pH 10.4 to 10.6, is applied, immersed in hydrogen peroxide which permeates the graphite causing it to swell and embrittle the spots which peel off under a warm water jet. Dots may be Red, Green, Blue. The electron beam area equals that of original coatings 12, 13, 14, i.e. corresponding to the phosphor dots 16, 17, 18 but is larger than the effective crosssectional area of the phosphor dots as viewed from the front side.
