Abstract

1359443 Making bags L VAN DER MEULEN 18 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 7566/72 Headings BSD and B5K Apparatus for making bags from a thermoplastics tubular foil 9 comprises a feeder 8, a drum 2 having at least one resilient anvil 17 co-operating with a rotating cutter 10 and at least one counter-sunk sealer 15 for heat-sealing the trailing end of a blank severed from the tube 9. Each sealer 15 (two shown) comprises a pair of pivotable jaws 16 interconnected by gears 23, 24 and provided with electrical resistance wires. Rotating fingers 22 urge the trailing end of each blank towards a sealer 15 as the blank is carried round on the drum 2 beneath retaining belts 11. Each blank is folded twice transversely, once by a respective folder blade 14 in the drum 2 co-operating with a slit 18 in a roller 3 and once by a blade 19 in the roller 3 co-operating with a slit 20 in a roller 4 before being folded twice longitudinally by a set of three rollers 27-29. To accommodate a change of bag size, a cutting/sealing station may be rendered inoperative by retracting a resilient anvil 17 towards the drum centre. The position of the folding blades 14 may be adjusted by turning a connecting arm 25.
