Abstract

1359414 Coated watercraft NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 12 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1389/72 Addition to 1303178 Heading B2E ]Also in Division B7] A watercraft has an adherent coating consisting of a water-insoluble hydrophylic polymer water-swellable to an extent of at least 10% by weight of polymer, the said polymer being an optionally partially hydrolysed cellulose ester, a cellulose ether, a polyurethane, a vinyl lower alkyl ether, a vinyl-alcohol containing polymer or copolymer, a polymer or copolymer containing vinyl pyrrolidone units, a polyelectrolyte (other than a resin having hydroxyalkyl acrylate or hydroxyalkyl methacrylate groups), a protein, a 3000-or-above molecular weight polyalkylene oxide or immine, or a phenoxy resin. The substrate may be wood, metal, plastics, or polyester impregnated fibreglass optionally coated with epoxy or vinyl-based paints or antifoulant finishes. Exhaustive examples of the coating polymers are given, the copolymers including a copolymerised monomers acrylates methacrylates, proteinaceous polymers including casein and gelatin, polyelectrolytes including polymers of itaconic and acrylic acids, copolymers containing maleic anhydride, polyvinyl acetates, or hydrolised polyvinyl acetate. Cross-linking of polymers containing hydroxyl functionality may be carried out in situ and exhaustive examples of cross-linking agents are given. Antifoulants may be incorporated in the hydrophilic polymer. Exhaustive examples are given including cuprous oxide, copper powder, mercurous oxide, organotin compounds, organolead compounds and organic compounds such as 10, 10'-oxybisphenoxazine, 1,2,3-trichloro-4, 6-dinitrobenzene, hexachlorophene, DDT, phenol mercuric acetate, tetrachloroisophthalonitrile and bis-(n-propylsulphonyl) ethylene. Conventional pigments and fillers may be included. The coating may be applied as a solution, or aqueous dispersion, by procedures such as brushing, dipping, spraying, doctor blades or roller coating.
