Abstract
1,271,572. Moisture barrier coatings. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 15 July, 1969 [19 July, 1968], No. 35650/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Substrates are provided with moisturebarrier coatings by applying thereto an aqueous polymer dispersion and drying the coating to effect cross-linking, said dispersion containing (a) a copolymer comprising 55-97% by weight of ethylene units and 3-45% by weight of units of an α, #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, 5-75% of the acid groups being neutralised and (b) 1-25% by weight, based on the weight of the copolymer, of an epoxy resin or aminoformaldehyde resin as cross-linking agent. The dispersions preferably also contain 1-25% by weight (based on polymer and resin solids) of a cross-linking catalyst, e.g. an ammonium salt or polyamino compound. The substrate may be a flame or electrical discharge treated polyolefin film, a polyester film, a nylon film, aluminium foil, a cellulosic web, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride film, paper, glass or wood. In Examples the dispersions are coated on the substrates by a number 10 wirewound bar.
