Abstract

1359087 Vibrators W A ATHAWES 7 April 1972 16279/72 Heading F2X A rotary vibrator comprises a housing 11 closed at its ends by a pair of end plates 25, 26 having axial bores 29, 30 through which bolts 31, 32 are inserted, an axial pin 33 between plates 25, 26 being formed with axial threaded bores 36 for receiving the threaded ends of the bolts 31, 32 and so securing the end plates 25, 26 to the housing 11. The pin 33 has a peripheral bearing surface 42 in the form of a continuous circumferentially extending V-shaped recess and is located within an annular rotor 38, the bore of which has a cross-section conforming to that of the pin bearing surface 42. Fluid, e.g. air, under pressure is fed into the housing 11 via an inlet passage 19, a similar passage 18 functioning as the exhaust outlet, to cause the rotor 38 to revolve about the pin 33 with a portion of the V-shaped projection of the rotor always received within a portion of the V- shaped recess of the pin, whereby movement of the rotor in a direction parallel to the axis of the pin is substantially prevented. Thus contact between the end faces of the rotor and the inner faces 28 of the end plates 25, 26 is minimized. The pin and the rotor are preferably formed of hardened ground steel or, alternatively, their bearing surfaces may be formed of hard facing alloy. In operation, the device is attached by bolting through holes 14a to the object to be vibrated, e.g. core boxes, match plates, &c., used in metal casting or hoppers, delivery shoots, &c. to ensure the flow of powdered materials. The fluid inlet may include a plurality of orifices spaced apart along the housing wall in a direction parallel to the pin axis (Fig. 4, not shown). In alternative constructions, the V-shaped recess is provided in the rotor and the V-shaped projection on the pin (Fig. 5, not shown), the rotor is located on the pin by a ring of rectangular cross-section turned on the pin outer wall and accommodated within a conforming recess in the rotor bore (Fig. 6, not shown), and the pin is provided with two spaced apart rings or ball-bearing assemblies which engage in spaced apart recesses in the rotor bore (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown).
