Abstract

1358901 Packaging apparatus for wrapping individual articles KRAFTCO CORP 16 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 33453/71 Heading B8C In a packaging machine, in-which individual articles such as cheese slices 24 are transported in equi-spaced relationship by an infeed conveyer 20 to a wrapping station 16 where they are wrapped in a tube of flexible wrapping material 14, in order to accommodate slices of different length in different production schedules without having to resort to changing the spacing of the conveyer lugs 22, and possibly its drive gearing, the speed of the drive 26 for the conveyer 22 is made variable so that it is periodically speeded up above that of the wrapping material to close effectively the gaps between successive slices just prior to their transfer to the wrapping material and periodically slowed down so that slices make contact with the wrapping material at the same speed as the latter. The drive 26 is readily adjustable so that the variation in speed of the conveyer can be altered to be compatible with the length of cheese slices in a particular batch. The drive 26 comprises a motor 34, Fig. 2, which, through chain and sprocket drive 44, 40 and spur gear 46 drives a differential system comprising a carrier gear 48 which is freely rotatable on a shaft 50 and which rotatably supports, in an opening 54, a planet gear 60 which meshes with a sun gear 62 fast on the shaft 50. A train of helical gears 66, 68, 74, 82 connects the shaft 50 with a shaft 84 which carries a sprocket 32 drive for the conveyer 22. A cam follower arm 58, connected to the shaft 56 of the planet gear 42, has a roller 88 received in a non-circular groove 92 in a cam plate 90 so that the planet gear 42 will rotate relative to the sun wheel 62 at portions of the track where the radius of the groove 92 is either increasing, or decreasing, to correspondingly decrease, or increase, the speed of the sun wheel 62 relative to the carrier gear 48. Different cam plates 90 can be easily fitted to accommodate differentlength slices. In order to adjust initially the exact time of the initial contact of the slices with the wrapping material the helical gear 82 is movable by a disc 120 and adjustment screw 110 axially along its splined shaft 100 and is rotated as it moves along the stationary gearwheel 72 to rotate the drive sprocket 32 of the conveyer 22. The screw 110 is lockable by a collar 124. Another conveyer can be driven by the duplicate gears 74a, 82a.
