Abstract

135,887. Bamford, S. B. Oct. 3, 1918. Rakes, horse. - In horse-rakes having self-acting mechanism which is brought into operation by causing pawls or the like to engage with ratchets on the hubs of the travelling wheels, special means are provided for actuating the pawls, for retaining the teeth in their raised position, for releasing the teeth at will, and for taking up wear of the brackets on which the teeth are fixed. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a rake in which the teeth 9 are fixed to independent brackets 8 threaded on a round bar 7 mounted in a swinging frame 6; but the invention is also applicable to rakes in which the teeth are hinged directly on the wheel axle. The pawls 18 are brought into engagement with the ratchet-wheels 4 by rocking a shaft 14 which is provided with arms 17 sliding in lugs 46 on the pawls. The shaft 14 is operated by means of a pedal 24, a push-rod 27, and a forwardly-projecting spring-controlled link 30 connected to an arm 23. The shaft 14 may be made in two pieces connected rigidly together by the arm 23. The tines may be held in their raised position by a spring- controlled or weighted catch 31 engaging with an arm 33 projecting from the swinging frame 6. The catch 31 may be raised to release the teeth by means of a lever 34 provided with an arm, link, or clutch to engage the catch, or by means of a pedal mounted on the draught frame 10 and connected by a rod to an arm mounted on the shaft 32 on which the catch 31 is pivoted. This pedal may be combined with a second pedal for lowering the catch 31, the combined pedal being held in either position by friction caused by a spring washer &c. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the ratchets on the travelling wheels have internal teeth, and the lifting-pawls 48 are moved into engagement by adjustable rods 51 connected to arms 52 on the shaft 14 and are moved out of engagement by cams 53 fixed on the main axle 1. In another modification, the ratchet-wheels have teeth on their faces. Wear of the brackets 8, Fig. 2, is automatically taken up, and lateral play prevented, by coiled springs or spring washers situated between the end brackets 8 and the ends of the swinging frame 6. According to the Provisional Specification, clutches may be used instead of the ratchet-wheels and lifting-pawls.
